France to arm drones, like the one pictured here. Source: Wikimedia CommonsFrance’s military surveillance drones are about to get a makeover in the near future according to a recent announcement from Defense Minister Florence Parly.
A few of the Reaper surveillance drones currently being used in Africa’s Sahel Region to fight Islamic extremists will eventually be outfitted with weapons.
According to Defense Minister Parly, the drones aren’t being redesigned to become “killer robots.” Instead, Parly hopes that arming the drones will grant them "endurance, discretion, surveillance and strike capability at the right place and the right moment."
Already being used by countries such as the United States, Israel, Great Britain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, Parly believes the armed drones will make France’s military “more effective.”
Currently, it is unclear what weapons will be added to the drones and what the timeline for the redesigned drones will be.
