The test at Berlin’s Suedkreuz station will take place over the course of six months, capturing the images of people entering the station and riding one of the station’s escalators using one of three cameras situated throughout the station.

The images will be used to compare with the previously submitted images provided by the more than 200 volunteer participants taking part in the study.

"Technical progress must not stop at our security services," Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said in a statement.

German officials will review the results once the test has completed.
