Say Ahhh: Dental Implant Surgery by Robot
Engineering360 News Desk | March 08, 2017A robotically assisted dental surgical system from Miami, Fla.-based Neocis Inc. was granted clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Assistive technology plans and guides dental implant surgery. The Yomi computerized navigational system provides assistance in both the planning and the surgical phases of dental implantation surgery (see video).
Yomi’s software is used to plan a procedure based on a patient’s CT scan. During the procedure, the system tracks the patient and controls the drill direction. Navigational guidance is provided through the use of haptic robotic technology, which constrains the drill in position, orientation, and depth.
The software allows for quick plan changes if needed, unlike surgical guides that are often pre-made for the patient ahead of time. Since there are no guides, the working view is not as obstructed.
