16 podcasts for professional and novice engineers alike
Marie Donlon | March 30, 2021In the past, Engineering360 has highlighted what Instagram and Twitter accounts engineers should follow, what books they should read and what movies they should watch. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before a list of engineering-specific podcasts would be curated…and here it is!
What follows is a rundown of engineering-specific podcasts that speak to those in the engineering profession, offering everything from career advice for the budding or veteran engineer to assessments of historical engineering failures or disasters. Although not an exhaustive list, the following 16 podcasts represent a range of engineering topics that will likely interest engineers at various stages of their professions as well as non-engineers. Although some of the selections that have made their way on the Engineering360 list are no longer producing new content, the topics discussed are relevant, nonetheless.

But Seriously, What is Engineering?
The But Seriously, What is Engineering podcast attempts to answer that question by exploring the profession of engineering via discussions about careers under the engineering umbrella as well as the future of engineering. It also attempts to flesh out what a career in engineering looks like via interviews and discussions from leaders in the field.
Level-Up Engineering
Level-Up Engineering is a podcast designed for engineers in management positions. It reportedly offers engineering managers tips about management and how to "level up" their engineering management skills. Much of the advice comes directly from leaders in the tech industry via interviews.
Engineering Commons
Ever wonder about the day-to-day doings of an engineer? Engineering Commons has got you covered, delving into subject matter appropriate for every-day engineers. This podcast offers everything from career planning advice to discussions about tools regularly used by engineers and is designed for virtually every discipline under the engineering umbrella.
The Engineering Career Coach
As its title suggests, The Engineering Career Coach guides listeners through various engineering careers, touching on topics that range from establishing a work-life balance to job changes and even information for those just beginning their engineering careers.

Cautionary Tales, Catastrophe! and Well There’s Your Problem
These three podcasts all focus on similar subject matter: exploring disasters and failures of engineering. Each of the podcasts revisits historic (and not-so historic) failures, touching on topics ranging from the Blitzkrieg and the pandemic to the recent weather issues in Texas and subsequent grid failures.
Soft Skills Engineering
The Soft Skills Engineering podcast goes beyond the scope of traditional engineering topics, focusing instead on developing skills not necessarily emphasized in the industry. Topics covered include discussions about pay raises, promotions, terminations, leadership and retention, among others.
Engineering Heroes
The Engineering Heroes podcast features a weekly chat with a rotation of working engineers discussing their areas of engineering expertise and careers in those fields.
Unprofessional Engineering
The Unprofessional Engineering podcast, as the name suggests, is designed so that the subject matter — computational fluid dynamics, for instance — is digestible for non-engineering audiences.
UCL Physics and Engineering in Medicine
This podcast, from the University College London, explores biomedical engineering topics and the role of engineering in healthcare. It examines the role of engineering in electron microscopy, nerve and muscle stimulators and brain and x-ray imaging, for instance.
Tech in Healthcare Reimagined
Like the previous podcast, the Tech in Healthcare Reimagined looks at the roles, both current and future, of technology and engineering in the healthcare industry. The hosts cover topics ranging from AI to wearable tech and everything in between.
The Civil Engineering Podcast
Hosted by and for civil engineers, the Civil Engineering Podcast highlights civil engineering and infrastructure projects and offers civil engineering-specific career advice.
Engineering IRL
The Engineering IRL (In Real Life, for those not in the know) podcast offers listeners a breakdown of engineering concepts and applies them to real-life scenarios. Additionally, the podcast offers listeners creative problem solving solutions in a nod to how engineers creatively solve problems.
Grinding Gears
The Grinding Gears podcasts takes engineers from the classroom to the workplace, highlighting engineering lessons that can only be learned on the job. This is accomplished via interviews with those working in the engineering field.
Her STEM Story
This podcast is designed to guide women pursuing careers in the male-dominated science, technology engineering and math (STEM) fields. Each podcast includes tips for navigating careers in STEM and includes interviews with women currently working in a STEM discipline.
