New fan uses less energy, sterilizes enclosed spaces
Marie Donlon | November 03, 2020A company spun off from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has developed a bladeless fan that simultaneously cools down while disinfecting the air in enclosed spaces.
The vortex ceiling fan — dubbed Vortec — is a combination ceiling fan LED lamp that draws air up from below, exposes it to an ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfection and forces the recycled air out in a 360° arc.
The UV light reportedly kills bacteria in the enclosed space, including, potentially, the COVID-19 virus, according to its developers. Additionally, the fan cools a room twice as fast as traditional fans using significantly less energy.
