An inflatable safety barrier intended to keep both drivers and road construction workers safe is being trialed on motorway work zones throughout England.

Highways England — the government-owned company that operates, maintains and improves motorways throughout England — is trialing the Vehicle Incursion Airbag, which is a large, bright and visible inflatable that can be erected in just minutes to keep drivers and road construction workers safe from injury.

The inflatable safety banner is designed to reduce the number of incidents — of which there are an estimated 240 each month — where drivers mistakenly drive into work zones. Such instances can prove dangerous to both drivers and to those working in those designated areas.

As such, the developers of the Vehicle Incursion Airbag designed the eye-catching, colorful inflatable to be used in conjunction with traditional traffic cones and signage to alter driver behavior.
