The world added nearly 5.2 GW of installed offshore wind capacity in 2019, setting a new record and marking a 24% increase from the year-before period, according to World Forum Offshore Wind. New projects had an average capacity of 352 MW.
Offshore wind installation capacity reached 27,213 MW by the end of 2019. Worldwide, 16 new offshore wind farms went into operation during 2019 in China, U.K., Germany, Denmark, Belgium and Taiwan, bringing the number of offshore wind farms to 146.
The U.K. remains the world’s biggest offshore wind market with 9.7 GW of total installed capacity. Germany retains its second place with a total of 7.5 GW of operational capacity. China, currently in third place, has 4.9 GW of installed offshore wind power.
Floating offshore wind generation is also picking up speed: Plans for two large-scale floating projects in South Korea brought the total floating offshore wind development pipeline to around 1 GW. France currently leads in this market with four floating offshore wind projects under development in the Atlantic Ocean.
