Following months and months of bad news, Facebook is offering its over 200 million users who identify as “single” on their Facebook profiles some good news: it's launching a dating service.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the service will "help people find partners."

"If we’re focused on helping people build meaningful relationships, then this is perhaps the most meaningful of all," Zuckerberg said. "This is going to be for building real long-term relationships not just for hookups."

As part of the service, users will be able to create a dating profile apart from their Facebook profile that will only appear to other users of the service. Matches will be determined given how users answer questions about dating preferences, things in common and even mutual acquaintances. Users of the service will also be able to message each other in a new section that won’t be connected to WhatsApp or Messenger.

As Facebook attempts to reinvent itself amid the recent privacy scandal with Cambridge Analytica, Zuckerberg assures users that the service was designed “from the ground up” and security was a major focus during its construction.

Competing with the number of dating sites and apps already on the market, Facebook’s dating profile is expected to be free to users.
