Artificial intelligence (AI) is the virtual wingman for users of a Boston-based dating app.

Users of the Icebrkr app, which made its debut on Valentine’s Day, have real-time access to an advice-giving AI chatbot dubbed Hootie. Hootie instructs the lovelorn in everything from selecting a profile picture and writing a profile bio to tips on how to start a digital conversation with a potential online mate.

In the event that Hootie’s advice is successful, the AI chatbot is also capable of offering recommendations for dinner date locations.

In the era of “catfishing,” where online love interests aren’t always who they say they are, the AI chatbot also helps users navigate the dating site, identifying when a potential mate’s profile is possibly fake.

Although the Icebrkr service is currently only available to those dating within a 20-mile radius of Boston, its creators envision expanding the service to include other cities in the future.

In the meantime, other dating sites are offering similar AI features for dating. Many dating sites are using the technology to make matches based on everything from compatibility to a potential mate's resemblance to a person’s favorite actor or actress. No less creative are the efforts of Samsung to make matches using their Refrigerdating app, which is designed to match folks based on the contents of their refrigerators. Similarly, researchers in the U.K. are also developing AI to help thwart online dating scams.
