'Do Not Disturb While Driving' Feature from Apple is Working, According to Study
Marie Donlon | April 18, 2018Since the debut of Apple’s “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature last September, drivers using the feature decreased their phone usage while driving by 8 percent, according to a new study.
Conducted by car insurance company Everquote, the study looked at over 780 miles of driving data logged by sensors such as those in a phone’s GPS and accelerometer.
Although the data revealed that people are still using their phones while driving, those (70 percent of study participants) who had not opted out of the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature — which is intended to reduce distracted driving by turning off all notifications when your iPhone detects that you are in a moving car — had used their phones 8 percent less during the period under study last year.
Though not a significant decline, researchers believe that it demonstrates how a software update can help prevent distracted driving.
