S. Himmelstein | March 06, 2018With companies, governments and individuals increasing their efforts to improve the sustainability of materials, could one of the world’s largest toymakers be far behind? LEGO®, the Danish company famous for its plastic construction kits, will be launching its sustainable LEGO bricks later this year.
Plant-based plastic, sourced from sugarcane, will be used in the manufacturing of leaves, bushes
LEGO botanical elements will be made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. Source: LEGOand trees for LEGO sets. These "botanical elements" are to be made from polyethylene, a soft, durable and flexible plastic based on sugar-cane material. They are also technically identical to those produced using conventional plastic, and have been tested to ensure the plant-based plastic meets the high standards for quality and safety that the LEGO Group has, and consumers expect from LEGO products.
These botanical polyethylene elements are 1-2 percent of the total amount of plastic elements produced by the LEGO Group. Plant-based polyethylene used by the company is made from ethanol produced from sugarcane. The sugarcane used is sourced sustainably in accordance with guidance from the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance (BFA) and is certified by the Bonsucro Chain of Custody standard for responsibly sourced sugarcane.
The development is part of the LEGO Group’s commitment to use sustainable materials in core products and packaging by 2030.
