Fully Electric, Autonomous Container Ships to Set Sail This Summer

Source: Omega ArchitectsThis summer, Port-Liner — a Dutch boat builder — will be set to launch a fleet of its battery-powered, autonomous barges in the Netherlands.
The “Tesla of the Canals” is among the fleet of autonomous ships that will connect Rotterdam, Antwerp and Amsterdam, carrying goods back and forth among the three ports powered entirely by six 20-foot long batteries charged using carbon-free energy from Eneco — a Netherland’s-based energy provider.
Capable of carrying 24 shipping containers each, the fleet is expected to affect air quality in the Netherlands by replacing 23,000 cargo-carrying diesel-powered trucks.
Although the ships will be entirely autonomous without an onboard crew, crew members will be on board for the ships’ maiden voyages.
The first ships, which can each operate for an uninterrupted 15 hours on a single battery charge, will set sail in August.
Excellent initiative. For when autonomous electric container ships with hydrogen fuel cells?
