The disorder, called selfitis, is thought by some to be a mental condition wherein the sufferer frequently and obsessively takes selfies to post on social media, in some cases, requiring professional intervention.
In fact, according to two researchers, there are three categories of the condition: borderline, acute and chronic. Based on data provided from 400 young students in India, researchers determined that those in the borderline category took a minimum of three daily selfies but did not post them on social media. Those at the acute stage took at least three daily selfies and posted all of them on social media. For sufferers in the chronic category, researchers described a sufferer’s compulsion to take and post selfies throughout the course of the day.
According to the study, over 40 percent of participants were classified as suffering from acute selfitis while over 25 percent were categorized as chronic sufferers and 34 percent were categorized as borderline.
The research is published in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.
Selfitis? Really? Sounds like this should be an April 1st article.
