A new trend is overtaking higher education in the United States. Overall, higher education enrollment fell by 2 percent from 2012 to 2014, while distance education enrollments grew by 7 percent for those taking at least one course. Global expansion of academic as well as corporate e-learning is also predicted through the next decade, with the latter emphasizing job-specific skills and compliance.
Training and Education
In today’s competitive market, the availability of such education and training is crucial to advancing careers. Training and education through NACE can launch a new career, broaden areas of expertise and offer greater recognition and credibility among peers both within a company and in today’s job market.
NACE International serves nearly 36,000 members in over 130 countries and is recognized globally as the premier authority for corrosion control solutions. The organization offers technical training and certification programs, conferences, industry standards, reports, publications, technical journals, government relations activities and more.
NACE provides a platform for disseminating knowledge, enhancing skills and expanding the professional networks of corrosion control and asset protection professionals worldwide. Courses are designed for continued, career-long professional development and may be taken as stand-alone trainings or as part of the path toward achieving certification.
Course Offerings
Classroom, in-house and online courses are offered on international specifications for the corrosion control industry. Some are more knowledge-based, while others teach skills that can be used directly in the field (i.e., cathodic protection testing or coating inspection). In 2014, over 16,000 students from 36 countries were trained through 829 courses offered by NACE.

Courses and certifications cover a range of topics, including coatings, cathodic protection, general corrosion and pipeline corrosion.
NACE’s Basic Corrosion eCourse is the most popular online training course, while the Coating Inspector Program courses are the most widely attended classroom/instructor-led trainings and serves as the world's most recognized coating inspector certification program.
NACE’s eCourses are available worldwide, with in-classroom training conducted at NACE facilities in Houston, Texas—the first U.S. training center dedicated to corrosion education—and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as well as 34 other countries, enabling attendees to earn certificates of completion. By taking a NACE eCourse, students can learn on their own time and at their own pace from work, home or on the road.
Online courses are presented in English, while in-house training is conducted in Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Korean and other languages.
Classroom training courses are open to the general public and are held in multiple languages as well. These courses are conducted at one of two NACE training centers or in contracted meeting space facilities.
In-house training is available for companies looking to bring NACE professional training to their facility. These courses can be held in multiple languages and are generally hosted at the sponsoring company’s facility.
Certifications
Professional credibility is enhanced by becoming certified via NACE International Institute, an independent affiliate of NACE International. Worldwide businesses rely on the NACE Institute certifications as a metric for increased standardization of personnel performance.
With over 20 certifications in six different subject areas, a certification from the NACE International Institute helps employees stand out among their peers, ensure employers of their skills and knowledge and increase the effectiveness and efficiency in employee job performance, giving them an edge. The value of a certification increases as new international standards related to that certification are created and as asset owners specify the certification in their hiring requirements.
