National Engineers Week Marked with Programs, Online EventsEngineering360 News Desk | February 22, 2017
It’s the 65th annual National Engineers Week! The week of George Washington’s birthday, who is considered by many to be one of the U.S.’s first engineers, is observed by more than 70 engineering, educational, and cultural societies as a time to celebrate and honor the profession.
DiscoverE, formerly the National Engineering Week Foundation, chose “Engineers Dream Big” as the 2017 theme. An IMAX movie with the same title features several big ideas, like the Solar Impulse solar-powered airplane and the Hyperloop, Elon Musk’s concept for a new form of transportation.
Thursday, February 23 is designated as Girl Day, when female engineers and their male colleagues provide programs to introduce girls to the breadth of engineering careers. A Girl Day Twitter Chat kicks off at 12:00 PM EST, focused on the theme “Role Models to Inspire Girls.”
Another high point of the week’s activities will be the announcement of awards to 2017 New Faces of Engineering, 2017 New Faces of Engineering College Edition, and outstanding middle- and high-school educators.
