Fiber Optics Pioneer Wins Tyndall Award
Engineering360 News Desk | November 29, 2016Evgeny Dianov, a professor at the Fiber Optics Research Center in Moscow, is the 2017 winner of the John Tyndall Award. This award, conferred by the Optical Society (OSA) and the IEEE Photonics Society, is one of the most prestigious awards the two societies present.

Credit: Hawke and AxelDianov, a pioneer in laser physics, nonlinear optics, and fiber optics, earned the award “for pioneering leadership in optical fiber development and outstanding contributions to nonlinear fiber optics and optical fiber amplifiers.” His early research into low loss optical fiber advanced optical design, transmission, linearity, and dispersion of a wide range of optical fiber compositions.
Since 1974, Dianov’s research has produced new types of optical fibers, new results in nonlinear fiber optics, and the development of highly efficient Raman fiber lasers and optical amplifiers. He has published more than 600 articles in scholarly journals and is a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The John Tyndall Award is named for the 19th century scientist who first demonstrated the phenomenon of internal reflection. Its recipients have made pioneering, significant, or continuing technical or leadership contributions to fiber optic technology.
Dianov will be presented with his award at the 2017 Optical Fiber Conference in Los Angeles, March 19-23, 2017. Corning Inc. endows the award, which includes a crystal sculpture that demonstrates internal reflection.
