A throwable panoramic tactical camera designed to protect soldiers in potentially hazardous environments has been developed by the American tech firm Bounce Imaging.

The Pit Viper 360 throwable device is expected to enable military personnel to collect intelligence from a safe distance, thus minimizing the time they spend in danger zones.

According to its developers, the Pit Viper 360 is the world’s first camera that combines six thermal imaging cores with an inertial measurement unit. Additionally, it is designed for tactical missions such as including hostage rescues and armed standoffs. It can also reportedly withstand being thrown down flights of stairs or out windows, for instance.

Further, it offers operators views into dangerous spaces without being directly exposed and its panoramic views use thermal imaging, thereby allowing soldiers to see heat signatures from people or objects within a room. This enables soldiers or law enforcement stationed nearby to determine how many people are inside a building and to monitor their movements.

“Operating directly in the panoramic projection several orders of magnitude more efficiently than traditional methods allows us to generate stabilized thermal panoramic video with low latency and very low [size, weight, and power] requirements,” the company explained.

The Pit Viper 360 is set to be available for both military and civilian customers by 2025.
