Electric vehicles (EVs) may get the limelight, but they are far from the only transit type that is facing transformation. Electrification and digitalization promise to disrupt everything from public transit to aerospace, as well as create new concepts about how energy is transmitted, stored and used.

How people and cargo get from A to B increasingly involves a personal digital device, be it a rideshare, last-mile rental, package delivery or even cueing a crosswalk. Vehicles and the urban landscape are converging on an intelligent network to optimize safety, traffic flow and energy use.

Vehicle types are also changing. In addition to EVs, automobiles are gradually becoming more autonomous. E-bikes and scooters are becoming more common, and many cities are expanding access and regulation for these transit options. Other vehicles, hyperloops and urban air mobility (aka air taxis) are not game changers at the moment, but promise a future where transit solutions are radically different.

These trends are not only reshaping how we move from place to place but also have the potential to transform cities and reduce the environmental impact of transportation systems.
