A manufacturer of additives, compounds and color masterbatches for the plastics industry has developed a barrier for ensuring that clear packaging films used in the food packaging industry protects food from ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the wavelength range from 200 nm to 380 nm.

Tosaf’s barrier solution, dubbed UV9389PE EU, reportedly protects foods from discoloration, as well as vitamin and flavor loss, which tend to occur thanks to degradation due to exposure to artificial light during storage, shipping and while the product is on store shelves.

As such, Tosaf's new UV blocker is expected to help prevent the occurrence of food wastage due to premature spoilage. Further, the developers of this UV blocking material are eyeing the film for applications beyond food packing, including the packaging of sensitive goods.
