High-tech adhesives for thin-film solar cells
S. Himmelstein | March 30, 2023New light-curing adhesives from DELO are engineered for bonding the protective films of thin-film solar cells. Made from epoxy resins or acrylates, these adhesives can also provide an effective barrier against humidity.
Composed of several layers with a thickness in the millimeter range, these solar cells feature active, energy-producing layers that are often vapor-deposited onto glass or an organic carrier material and covered with protective film on the front and back. The KATIOBOND LP655 adhesive can be applied to reliably bond these protective films, forming a barrier against humidity. This is extremely important at the edges, as penetrating humidity would impair the cell functionality.

The raw materials used in the adhesive allow for a low water vapor transmission rate of 6 g per mm/m² in 24 hours, which has been tested at a temperature of 60° C and a relative humidity of 90%. This prevents premature degradation of the solar cells and contributes to a long device lifetime.
The transparent adhesive features high peel resistance on polyethylene terephthalate, cures in seconds under ultraviolet light and has been optimized for slot-die coating. DELO also offers various products based on epoxy resins and acrylates that can be used for roll-to-roll processes.
