Scientists and engineers from the University of Cambridge in the U.K. have developed a prototype of a carbon-based air filtration nanomaterial that reportedly captures and destroys viruses.

Designed to work as a standalone unit or incorporated into an existing heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filtration system, the prototype features ultra-thin carbon nanotube electrically conductive membranes.

Reportedly, the material simultaneously filters viruses while sanitizing using thermal flashes via resistive heating to temperatures over 100° C. According to its developers, the prototype deactivates viruses in mere seconds.

Designed for emergency vehicles, healthcare facilities, schools and other high traffic public spaces, the prototype achieved air purification of 99% within a small room or an ambulance within roughly 10 to 20 minutes, according to its developers.

The study — Filtration of viral aerosols via a hybrid carbon nanotube active filter — appears in the journal Carbon.
