GE inks its largest wind turbine order in Asia
David Wagman | November 12, 2019GE Renewable Energy will provide turbines for a 715 megawatt (MW) wind farm to be developed by China Huaneng Group Co. Ltd. in Puyang, Henan Province, China.
The deal represents GE’s largest wind order in Asia, and is one of the largest onshore wind contracts awarded to a non-Chinese wind turbine generator OEM in China.
According to the agreement, the GE business unit will provide 286 units of its 2.5-132 turbines with 130 m soft steel towers. The turbines are designed for the low-wind-speed needs of the China wind market and will be manufactured by GE in China.
China Huaneng is one of the largest state-owned power generation companies in China. GE and China Huaneng earlier worked together on the 151 MW Huaneng Dali Longquan wind project in Yunnan. That site uses GE’s 2.75-120 turbine, among the largest onshore wind turbines in China at the time.
Expanding Chinese presence
In July, GE Renewable said it would open an offshore wind factory at Jieyang’s offshore wind cluster in the Chinese province of Guangdong. It said it also would establish an operation and development center in the city of Guangzhou.
The Jieyang factory is intended to help meet Chinese demand for offshore wind energy and will serve domestic and regional projects. Site construction is expected to begin by the end of this year and be completed in 2021, with assembly production in the second half of 2021.
The company's operation and development center in Guangzhou will perform research and development activities focused on regional needs. The site will also be the regional sales and project management office for GE Renewable Energy’s offshore wind business.
Nothing new here, just the usual Chinese scam which is to place a large order that has a cancellation clause, then take delivery of the first item and cancel the rest of the order while they set about copying the first one they received.
