T-Mobile has announced that it is launching a new feature along with Comcast Corp. that will block robocalls, according to reports.

The feature will alert consumers via smartphone screens that incoming calls are “Caller Verified,” meaning that the incoming call is not a robocall. This is possible due to an industry standard called “Secure Telephony Identity Revisited (STIR) and Secure Handling of Asserted information using toKENs (SHAKEN),” or STIR/SHAKEN, which identifies authentic calls across networks.

The feature is launching amid recent reports that there has been a significant uptick in robocalls. So called for their prerecorded voice messages designed to deliver communications from political parties or telemarketers, robocalls have increased in recent months with reports suggesting that an average of 168.8 million robocalls are made every day, according to YouMail, a robocall management company.

The new feature will soon be available to T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers on select smartphone devices by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Inc. T-Mobile explained that it is working with other phone manufacturers such as Apple Inc. to launch the feature as well in the near future.

“Robocalls and spam calls are an industry-wide problem, and we’ve got to join forces to keep consumers protected. Today, we’re the first to cross industry lines to do just that,” said John Legere, chief executive of T-Mobile.
