Created by Paris art collective Obvious, the Portrait of Edmond Belamy was produced using a dataset of 15,000 portraits dating back to the 14th through 20th centuries and an algorithm.

The work is the first of its kind to be sold at a major auction house.

"AI is just one of several technologies that will have an impact on the art market of the future — although it is far too early to predict what those changes might be," said Christie's specialist Richard Lloyd.
