Source: AdhereTechRecent attempts to bridge the gap between patient behavior and healthcare recommendations include connected medical devices. On the prescription side, smart pill bottles can address a patient’s adherence to prescription dose rates.
Smart wireless pill bottles from AdhereTech have shown to significantly improve patients' adherence to specialty medication prescriptions. The pill bottle incorporates a built-in cellular chip which collects and sends data to a secure dashboard.
The device requires minimal intervention. It identifies missed doses and relays an alert via text messages, automated phone calls or other local alarms in real-time. The system is fully customizable providing intervention as needed to improve patient adherence.
Initial clinical research is promising and as AdhereTech has active partnerships with large pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies and healthcare firms, their Smart Wireless Pill Bottles are likely to fill a need in ensuring adherence for specialty medications, which accounts for $290 billion of the annual $750 billion in wasted healthcare spent in the United States according to the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation (NEHI).
