As each day passes, researchers and scientists come up with new and sometimes unexpected ways to simplify life through technology — and the folks at Asahi Power Service in Japan are no different, as they prepare to release a drone-powered parasol.

Offering a hands-free experience for those who want protection from the sun’s powerful rays, Asahi Power Service expects to release the drone parasol next year.

"I decided to develop it as I don't like to hold an umbrella," said company president Kenji Suzuki.

For now, the 60-inch wide, 11-pound drone is only capable of flying for five minutes per charge. Hoping to increase flying time to roughly 20 minutes, Asahi Power Service expects to make the drone lighter.

"The first prototype we made was just a drone attached to a regular parasol," said Suzuki. "We are now testing the third-generation prototype and trying to overcome (the technological challenges of) hovering in a stable manner above the head of the user and then chasing the user."

At least at first, the device will only be used in private settings such as golf courses due to regulations surrounding autonomous aircraft tech.

With an estimated price tag of $275 (30,000 yen), the parasol is only capable of protecting the user from the sun because it is not yet waterproof.

"Eventually, we aim to develop it into an umbrella," Suzuki said.
