Car manufacturer Volvo is taking steps — beyond making greener cars and more efficient factories —to tackle environmental issues with a company-wide ban on single-use plastics.

In support of the Environmental Clean Seas campaign, the company will outlaw single-use plastics such as food containers, cutlery, plates and cups by the end of 2019 in its facilities around the world.

Recognizing that many major companies contribute to the growing issue of plastic pollution, Volvo is planning to replace these products with products made from environmentally-friendly materials such as paper, pulp and wood.

The company estimates that this initiative will result in the elimination of more than 500 plastic products per employee, per year.

Stuart Templar, Director for Sustainability at Volvo Cars, said: “Plastics pollution is one of the great environmental challenges of our time. We take our responsibility seriously. We must play our part in helping tackle this global problem.”

The first steps will include removal of single-use plastics from facilities in the U.S., Belgium, China, Sweden and Malaysia.
