Facebook may offer users a clearer path for reporting abusive or offensive content thanks to a new “downvoting” feature that is currently being tested on only a handful of select users.

Not to be confused with Reddit’s downvoting option — where questionable content is demoted to near invisibility — Facebook’s downvote recently debuted on a number of Facebook users’ pages and also appears as a function on comments made on public Facebook page posts.

"We are not testing a dislike button," the company said in an email. "We are exploring a feature for people to give us feedback about comments on public page posts."

Current methods for reporting such content offer a less direct way to alert Facebook about the post once they activate the “Hide Comment” option. The new feature hides the questionable content much like the current feature, but, in contrast, Facebook will ask users to include “why” the comment has been flagged. Once flagged, menu options appear offering users a chance to describe the content as either “off topic,” “misleading,” “offensive” or “other.”

For now, it isn’t clear when or if the feature will be made available to all Facebook users.
