Helsinki, Finland-based Neste, a provider of renewable fuel and feedstock technologies, claims to be making Source: NesteSource: Nesteinroads in the effort to reduce global greenhouse emissions. During 2017, the use of the company’s renewable fuels to displace fossil fuels lowered such emissions by 8.3 million metric tons or 8.3 billion kilograms. This reduction equates to the removal of 3 million passenger cars from the roads for a full year — more than the amount of cars in the city of London, UK, for example.

About 90 percent of the annual emissions reduction is largely attributed to use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, a low-carbon biofuel derived from waste and residue raw materials, such as animal fat from meat processing waste, used cooking oils and waste and residues from vegetable oil processing. The total amount of emissions averted increased by 1.6 million tons over 2016. The company also cites increased production volumes at its refineries in Finland, the Netherlands and Singapore as agents of progress in emission declines.

The emission reduction is calculated by comparing the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of the renewable fuels that Neste produces in a year to the life cycle emissions of conventional European diesel.
