Hydrogen is increasing its presence in the U.S. as an automotive fuel. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), there are now 39 publicly available hydrogen stations for fueling fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in the country. As of January 25, 2018, 35 of these are in California, two in South Carolina and two in the Northeast. An additional 29 public stations in California and five in the Northeast are planned.
Of these 39 publicly available stations, 31 are retail; the non-retail stations involve special permissions from the original equipment manufacturers to fuel along with pre-authorization from the station provider.
A total of 276,535 kg hydrogen was dispensed through the 2nd quarter of 2017 by the retail stations that are open to all FCEV customers with a point-of-sale system. The graph shows increasing amounts of hydrogen have been dispensed each quarter in the last two years as more FCEVs hit the market.
An Alternative Fueling Station Locator for the U.S., made available by DOE, depicts 24,731 alternative fueling stations nationwide.
