Funerals in Japan may never be the same thanks to a code update that allows a Softbank humanoid robot called "Pepper" to chant sutras while beating a drum.

The robot, which was recently revealed at a trade show for funeral services in Tokyo, can be outfitted in a Buddhist monk's robe and can be borrowed for $450 per funeral service — a significant cost savings compared to the $2,175 price tag for the services of a human priest.

Michio Inamura, the company's executive adviser, said the robot would be able to fulfill religious duties that are increasingly neglected in society. With less and less people becoming affiliated with temples and learning how to perform these religious ceremonies, the need for technology like "Pepper" is growing rapidly.

Inamura also noted that Pepper is good with memorizing things sequentially, so the idea to have it recall a chant seemed natural.

Additionally, the robot can live stream the services for those not in attendance.
