Exotec’s new robot system promises to transform storage and retrieval
GlobalSpec News Desk | February 20, 2025Exotec, a provider of warehouse robotics, has launched the latest iteration of its Next Generation Skypod system, featuring enhanced performance, improved storage density and advanced software capabilities.
The new Next Generation Skypod system features several upgrades, including a more compact Skypod robot, a workstation for robot-to-robot picking, a high-throughput exchanger and denser storage. These innovations, along with software enhancements, increase throughput at a single workstation by 50% while boosting storage density by up to 30% compared to the previous version.

A major differentiator of the Next Generation Skypod is its ability to handle both each and case picking, enabling Exotec to meet multichannel fulfillment needs with a single solution. The system also integrates several value-added logistics features that traditionally require external equipment and complex subsystems. This streamlined approach simplifies warehouse operations and reduces the footprint by minimizing the need for conveyors, sorters, external storage and packing stations.
Key features of the Next Generation Skypod include:
- Integrated buffer: The system handles buffering within its framework. Completed or semi-completed orders are automatically stored in the racks until ready for outbound shipping or further consolidation, reducing the need for external staging areas.
- Perfect sequencing: Robots and the exchanger work together to group orders in precise arrangements before outbound dispatch. This ensures optimal loading of pallets, containers, or trucks based on delivery routes, store planograms, or unloading requirements, eliminating the need for external sorting equipment.
- Pick-and-pack integration: Operators pick directly into fulfillment containers, eliminating downstream manual packing. This is especially effective when combined with right-size packaging solutions, reducing last-mile shipping costs.
