The imperial sizes range from 0.120 to 0.97 of an inch in outside diameter and 0.250 of an inch to 3 inches in free length. The metric sizes range from 9.25 mm to 14 mm in outside diameter and 16.2 mm to 79.5 mm in free length.

Extension springs are available in a variety of materials and end types, including machine hooks, cross over center loops, double loops, and full twist loops.
