ABB introduces a new motor for challenging industrial applications
Diana Aoun | August 07, 2023ABB has developed a new generation of NEMA modular induction motors, the AMI 5800. These motors are designed to be energy efficient and reliable in demanding applications, such as pumps, compressors, fans, extruders, conveyors and crushers. The AMI 5800 is rated for a power output of up to 1750 HP and can be customized to meet specific requirements.
The AMI 5800 is a true NEMA design, which means that it meets both electrical performance requirements and mechanical mounting standards. The motor has a high-strength welded steel frame that is typically found only in larger frame sizes. This lowers stress on the motor and ensures reliable operation in harsh conditions.

The AMI 5800 also has a shorter bearing-to-bearing span than previous models. This improves performance at high speeds and allows the motor to be used as a simple drop-in replacement to upgrade existing equipment. In addition, most AMI 5800 designs meet or exceed North American standards for energy efficiency, while further customization enables some models to operate above the IE4 equivalent level of energy efficiency.
The new motor is configured for optimal airflow, meaning that it will run as cool as possible, whether in an open-air installation or completely enclosed with a cooler. The time-tested MICADUR insulation system makes the motor suitable for starting high inertia loads direct online (DOL), however it is also an ideal partner for variable speed drives (VSDs).
The AMI 5800 has a design life of 25 years or 20,000 starts, and is available in a variety of cooling methods, including air, water and oil. It is compatible with a wide range of shaft extensions and terminal boxes and is manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality and environmental standards.
