App promises to keep wearers safe in event of attack
Marie Donlon | June 28, 2023A newly developed app for keeping women safe as they walk or run alone has been developed by researchers from the University of Bath in the U.K.
The women's safety smartwatch app, dubbed Epowar, reportedly monitors the heart rate and body motion of the wearer to detect distress. In the event of an attack, the device will automatically send an emergency alert to the wearer’s contacts.
Designed with women walking or running alone in mind, the app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to immediately respond if a user is attacked. In addition to detecting distress, the wearable device will automatically record and store evidence like microphone data, GPS, vital signs and movement within a cloud system.
To create the AI-powered system, the researchers analyzed detectable responses to physical distress as well as thousands of samples of physiological and motion data. As such, the models for the device can determine incidents of distress from day-to-day activities and exercises, like walking.
That way they know where to find the body.
