A new platform to boost battery design
S. Himmelstein | May 09, 2023A streamlined approach to battery design, testing and optimization has been launched by About:Energy, a spinout from the University of Birmingham, U.K.
The Voltt battery design software platform is designed to shorten research and development timelines, improve battery performance, and reduce development risk for battery cells and systems in automotive, aerospace and niche industries. The comprehensive system centralizes data collection for battery designSource: About:Energy projects and enables users to easily compare and analyze different battery types to inform decisions about which cells are best suited to specific needs.
Tiered subscriptions for the platform offer a level that predicts the electrical and thermal behaviors of a battery design, and a level that predicts electrochemical behaviors including voltage current performance and internal state of a battery. Another user category addresses degradation due to cumulative use and shelf-life, and offers customizable features covering cost modeling, supply chain and scale-up.
About:Energy’s battery models are now undergoing a wide range of validation, including temperature, state-of-charge and aging. The characterization and modeling technologies incorporated into the platform were developed through research efforts at Imperial College London, University of Birmingham and The Faraday Institution.
