Air source heat pump trial underway in the UK
S. Himmelstein | December 16, 2022The performance of a roof-mounted heat pump, considered the first in the U.K., is being evaluated by housing developer Bellway and partner Worcester Bosch at its experimental eco house at the University of Salford.
The Future Home was constructed to test innovations in building materials, the effects of double and triple glazing, solar energy storage, heat recovery from wastewater, and how to make most efficient use of air source heat pumps. Bellway has engineered the house to support the 200 kg air source heat pump within the

The heat pump evaluation is vital as these air source heat pump systems are expected to replace natural gas boilers in most U.K. homes starting in 2025. Researchers will also test underfloor and infrared heating, plus a range of low-carbon innovations including mechanical ventilation.
In 2023, selected guests will be invited to stay in the home so data can be collected on the effectiveness of each innovation. Experts at the university will analyze the results to help determine the most viable ways for the industry to move toward net zero.
