Grid network monitors are being installed in Scotland to maximize electrical capacity for green energy solutions during the 2021 UN COP26 Climate Change Conference underway in Glasgow through November 12.

The 197 VisNet monitors installed to date by powerline manager SP Energy Networks in partnership with engineering production firm EA Technology provide real-time analysis of how power networks are being used. In Glasgow alone, 165 monitors are being used in the COP26 host city to ensure a stable and reliable Source: SP Energy NetworksSource: SP Energy Networkselectricity network during what will be a period of increased demand on power supplies.

Embedded in substations, the monitors track energy usage and availability within local areas. The data help engineers understand where additional capacity may be available on low voltage networks so that appropriate connections for low carbon technologies, such as electric vehicle (EV) charging points and heat pumps, can be identified.

The ability to analyze energy use and supply trends also lends itself to rapid identification of areas where capacity is strained and implementation of corrective supply measures.
