A sustainable aviation future is in sight for DHL Express following its order of 12 electric Alice eCargo planes from Eviation.
The single pilot aircraft can carry 1,200 kg and requires 30 minutes or less to charge per flight hour. With a maximum range of up to 815 km, the electric plane will operate in all environments currently serviced by piston and turbine aircraft. Advanced electric motors with fewer moving parts will translate into increased reliability and reduce maintenance costs for operators.
The zero-emissions aircraft is ideal for feeder routes and requires less investment in station infrastructure. The Alice can be charged while loading and unloading operations occur, ensuring quick turnaround times. An 820 kWh lithium-manganese-cobalt-oxide battery pack will power the Alice eCargo at a cruising speed of 220 knots and a service ceiling is 32,000 feet.
DHL Express is expected to take delivery of the electric airplanes in 2024.
It will be interesting to see how this works out for DHL.
