A produce freshness solutions company has launched an edible, plant-based coating designed to keep produce fresh, thereby extending its product life and reducing food loss and waste.

AgroFresh’s coating will be included under the company’s VitaFresh Botanicals brand, and it enhances the fruit skin’s protective layer using “anti-thirst” technology. This technology reportedly boosts the skin’s protective barrier by creating a double membrane that prevents dehydration as the fruit travels through the supply chain.

According to AgroFresh, the coating is sustainable and promises to reduce the amount of plastic packaging waste in the food and beverage packaging industry. Additionally, the technology is easy to incorporate into current packaging operations.
