Study: More than 50% of transit agencies deploying connected vehicles
Engineering360 News Desk | December 08, 2020A new report published by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has revealed the findings of its 2019 Connected Vehicle (CV) and Automated Vehicle (AV) Survey, discovering that more than 50% of surveyed agencies are actively engaged with CVs.
Reportedly, just one-quarter of the agencies surveyed revealed that they have deployed CVs and another 30% of those surveyed reported that they intend to deploy CVs in the future. Currently, freeway agencies lead in CV activities compared to roughly half of arterial and transit agencies.
For autonomous vehicles, 39% reported AV testing or deployment occurring in their region or state. However, just 14% reported active involvement in the testing while 10% supported AV testing and 4% lead AV testing. Additionally, 25% of agencies reported no involvement in the AV testing.
The report summarized the data from the 2019 CV/AV Survey, which was administered to freeway, arterial and transit agencies from 78 large metropolitan areas and 30 medium-sized cities.
The findings provide the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Joint Program Office with an initial understanding of CV and AV deployment and it will be used to respond to ITS deployment gaps and to execute technical transfer activities that help states and local agencies plan and execute ITS deployments.
The report, called the Intelligent Transportation Systems Deployment: Findings from the 2019 Connected Vehicle (CV) and Automated Vehicle (AV) Survey, is now available in the National Transportation Library.
