Construction company using automation, robots to build dam
Marie Donlon | July 30, 2020A construction firm based in Japan is using robots to build an 84 m dam.
The Obayashi Corporation is reportedly building the concrete dam, which will be located in the Mie Prefecture in southeast Japan, using robots and assorted automated technology.
According to a spokesperson from the Obayashi Corporation, each step of the construction project will feature at lease some automation including fully automated cranes and robotic machines developed by Obayashi that pour concrete and arrange and stack the dried concrete slabs to form the dam.

So far, the company believes that any automation efficiencies experienced in the construction of the dam are due to automating the time and labor intensive process of stacking the concrete slabs. As such, the company believes that the robots have led to a 10% increase in productivity. However, the company believes that once the number of human workers on site monitoring the robots decreases, that increase in productivity will reach 30%.
The dam is expected to be completed by March of 2023.
