Atom Power introduced a solid-state circuit breaker, the Atom Switch, which is reportedly safer and faster than traditional mechanical circuit breakers.

The Atom Switch is a digital circuit breaker that doubles as a power management device. The device is 3,000 times faster than the fastest mechanical breaker on the market to date, and the technology is UL-listed for commercial use.

Part of what makes the solid-state circuit breaker revolutionary is not only that it is the first digital circuit breaker to receive UL489 and UL1557 listings, but that it is also an extension of the industrial internet of things. The solid-state device couples with Atom OS, an intelligent web-based software application that allows users to control and change circuit breaker characteristics to address demand-based power management, optimize EV charging stations or even act as a complete motor control center with motor soft-start capabilities.

The Atom Switch is available in four models supporting both two-pole and three-phase circuits with adjustable trip setting that ranges from 15 A to 100 A. The device can be remote controlled, features programmable on/off scheduling, metering capabilities and dynamic time-current curve adjustments. Initial use cases include integration into commercial building with EV charging ports and in industrial settings as a motor control center. A lower-cost, second-generation device is also being built in-house. With its ability to significantly reduce arc flash and short circuit hazards, the solid-state device poses safety benefits for both residential and commercial settings.
