Otter Products, the makers of OtterBox phone cases, has created a possible solution to the packaging waste that typically accompanies meal preparation kits with a line of reusable containers called Liviri. According to reports, the proposed scheme would have customers receiving meal prep kits in reusable containers that include built-in insulation and reusable ice packs, eliminating the boxes filled with insulation, separate bags, containers and gel-filled ice packs. Once unpacked, the containers could be returned to the company where they are cleaned, refilled and sent out to another customer. According to Liviri, this process can be replicated up to 75 times per container.
Up front, the new packaging will likely cost more than the traditional meal kit delivery boxes, insulation and ice packs. Yet, the company predicts that with continued use, the price should go down. Following testing of the containers last summer, the company is ready to potentially pair with meal kit companies and companies that ship meat products.
As more and more companies examine their use of single-use plastics and other waste, creative solutions to the problem are beginning to emerge. One such example is a recently announced coalition of companies that has agreed to replace single-use packaging of some brand-name products with reusable containers on a trial basis.
Kentucky fried chicken has been doing this for years. When you order a $ 5.00 meal box , order # 1 , ( 2 pieces of chicken, a biscuit, a medium size cold drink, a chocolate chip cookie and a mash potato with gravy ) , the mash potatoes come in a reusable dishwasher safe container.
This is the only fast food restaurant that I know of that gives you a real reusable container.
