Source: Atkins GlobalThe finishing touches are being put on the world’s first underground hotel ahead of its opening, slated for this October.
Called the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland, the hotel was built into a former rock quarry located in the Sheshan Mountain Range in China. Behind the project is Atkins Global, a British engineering, project management and design group responsible for the space, which boasts 383 rooms and 18 floors, 16 of which are located beneath vibrant green grass which blends in with the surroundings and an aquarium that circles two floors of underground. Additionally, the hotel is capable of creating its own power using solar and geothermal energy.
"By building the hotel where it is, designers and developers hope to prevent further damage to the ecological environment around it. The Songjiang Quarry Hotel may become just about the greenest hotel ever made," said a representative from Atkins Global.
Located just 22 miles from Shanghai, the hotel took more than 10 years and roughly 5,000 engineers, architects and designers to construct.
The price tag for a stay in what is expected to be a five-star hotel is currently unavailable.
