In order to provide clear takeoff and landing paths for airplanes, Greenland Wuhan Center, originally designed to surpass the Shanghai Tower to become China’s tallest building, had its total height trimmed by 21% by officials in Wuhan.

The project broke ground in 2010 and was to have been completed in 2019. The project broke ground in 2010 and was to have been completed in 2019. The $4.38 billion project, located in the city’s Wuchang District, will now reach 500 m, some 136 m lower than its original design. A 2017 expansion of the city’s airport put the planned 126-story tower within the path of planes approaching Tianhe International Airport.

The project broke ground in 2010 and was to have been completed in 2019. Work was halted in August 2017 when construction reached the 96th floor.

The reduced height would leave the building as China’s fifth-tallest, below the 632 m height of the Shanghai Tower. It also would be behind the Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, Goldin Finance 117 in Tianjin and the CTF Finance Centre in Guangzhou.

News reports say that a total of 1,023 units below the 85th floor have been approved for pre-sale, including office space from the 4th to 62nd floors, and luxury apartments from the 67th to 85th floors. The redesign plan will affect construction of the project’s hotel and observation deck space, which were planned to begin at the 85th floor.
