Amid concerns that algorithms used by tech giants are unfair in their decision making, IBM is getting ready to launch a new tool designed to scan for signs of such bias.

The tool, called the Fairness 360 Kit, will analyze in real-time how and why algorithms make the decisions they do. The technology is getting set to debut following reports that facial recognition systems are unable to identify faces other than white ones.

Because algorithms make automated decisions on any number of issues including policing, what people see online and insurance, what those algorithms recommend comes with greater consequences.

While owners generally cannot see how algorithms make such decisions, IBM is offering a transparent approach to building algorithms with its cloud-based, open-source software. As such, customers will be able to observe through a visual dashboard how algorithms make decisions and what factors have influenced those decisions.

Eventually, the approach will also monitor records for fairness, accuracy and performance.

"We are giving new transparency and control to the businesses who use AI and face the most potential risk from any flawed decision-making," said David Kenny, senior vice president of Cognitive Solutions.
