A strategy in Dubai mandates that landlords and contractors must use green cement in constructing new buildings that protects the environment and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

“The municipality will inspect new construction sites and check the cement used in buildings after the decision is enforced," Lootah says. “Using green cement will be a prerequisite for granting construction permission." Companies that fail to abide by this new regulation will be penalized.

The environmentally friendlier cement, which was developed in Germany nearly three years ago, is made by incorporating and optimizing recycled materials. This reduces consumption of natural raw materials, water and energy, resulting in a more sustainable material.
