Artificial Meteor Showers Will Soon be for Sale
Marie Donlon | March 27, 2018Consumers will soon be able to purchase an artificial meteor shower thanks to a private Japanese-based space company.
Astro Live Experiences (ALE) has been developing the world’s first artificial shooting star project called Sky Canvas. According to ALE, the project will attempt to produce artificial shooting stars by projecting particles (made from special materials) from orbiting micro-satellites.
Upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, the particles will burn through a process called plasma emission, which will create the impression of shooting stars.
“We aim to deliver our shooting stars on demand, anywhere in the world," ALE said in a statement. "The shooting stars particles burn up completely 60-80 km above the Earth and will be visible by people in an area around 200 km in diameter.”
However, the artificial meteor showers, according to some reports, could cost in the neighborhood of $40,000 per show. And if that weren’t enough, the scheme has concerned some experts who believe that from “an orbital degree standpoint,” the shows will add to overcrowding in the low-earth orbit within the next decade.
