Waste-to-product company Renewi PLC recently started accepting waste shipments at its new Organics Biofuels Processing Facility, a closed-loop and fully-integrated organics waste management system in the city of Surrey, Canada, that is expected to help supply fuel for municipal waste collection trucks.
The closed-loop facility can receive and process up to 115,000 tons of organic waste annually. Kitchen and yard waste from the urban area, along with commercial waste from across the region will be converted into renewable biomethane gas that will power waste collection trucks. The facility will also produce a compost product suitable for landscaping and agricultural applications.
The company claims its facility is among the largest of its kind in North America, with the capacity to process 100 percent of the city’s organic waste over the 25-year contract term. It is expected to help Metro Vancouver achieve its regional 70 percent waste diversion target.
